Synopsis

They’re just two little girls from Little Rock. Not Quite. Howard Hawks’ subversive musical comedy turns the tables on the “gentlemen” with subtlety and wit. Marilyn Monroe’s diamond-loving gold digger catches a ship to Paris with down-to-earth showgirl pal Jane Russell, attracting every male with a heartbeat along the way. The two navigate through a sea of men - an aging millionaire, preteen heir, a private eye and an entire men’s Olympic swim team (slyly objectified by Hawks) - always charting their own course. A delightful Technicolor romp with a trove of commentary hidden beneath its surface, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes remains one of the best musicals of the 1950s. Charles Horak
